How market-making bots work on Polymarket
A market-making bot posts both a bid and an ask around a market's fair probability and earns the spread whenever both sides trade. It doesn't predict outcomes — it gets paid for standing in the middle and keeping the book liquid.
On Polymarket, makers can also earn liquidity rewards on eligible markets, which can turn even a spread-neutral book into positive expectancy. The bot's real job is everything around the quotes: repricing continuously as probability moves, and keeping inventory close to neutral so one resolution can't wipe out weeks of spread income.
What to look for in a market-making bot
Inventory management is the whole game. Check how the bot skews quotes once it accumulates one side, whether it widens or pulls quotes around scheduled news, and whether it understands Polymarket's liquidity-rewards parameters. Hard position limits are non-negotiable — a maker bot without them is a liability the first time a market gaps. If the author publishes fill rates and adverse-selection stats, that's a strong signal they know what they're doing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is market making on Polymarket profitable?
- It can be — spread income plus liquidity rewards is a real edge on liquid markets. The cost is adverse selection: informed traders hitting your stale quotes right before the price moves. Profitability lives or dies on repricing speed and inventory control.
- How much capital does market making need?
- More than most strategies. You hold inventory on both sides of every market you quote, and returns scale roughly with the capital deployed. Starting on one or two liquid markets keeps the requirement manageable.
- What is adverse selection?
- Getting filled precisely when you're wrong — someone with better information lifts your quote moments before the probability moves against you. Good maker bots minimize it by repricing fast, widening around events and cutting size when flow turns one-sided.
